Город на юго-западе штата Джорджия, на р. Макали-Крик [Muckalee Creek]. 17 тыс. жителей (2000). Административный центр [county seat] округа Самтер [Sumter County]. Основан в 1832. Торгово-промышленный центр района животноводства, деревообработки, добычи бокситов и каолина. Производство сорочек, мебели, передвижных домов [mobile home]. Юго-западный университет Джорджии [Georgia Southwestern University] (1906), Технический колледж Южной Джорджии [South Georgia Technical College] (1948). Основан в 1832, статус города с 1855. Назван в честь мореплавателя Америго Веспуччи [Vespucci, Amerigo] или, по одной из местных версий, в честь "веселых парней" ["merry cusses"], основавших город. В Америкусе многое связано с президентом США Дж. Картером [Carter, James (Jimmy) Earl], который родился в соседнем городке Плейнс [Plains]. Здесь в 1976 основана и находится благотворительная организация "Жилье для человечества" [Habitat for Humanity]. С местного аэродрома Саутер-филд [Souther Field] начался первый полет Ч. Линдберга [Lindbergh, Charles Augustus] (1923). Неподалеку от города - Национальная историческая достопримечательность "Андерсонвилл" [Andersonville National Historic Site]. Центральная часть города застроена преимущественно домами викторианской эпохи и постройками 1920-х, среди которых наиболее известны отель "Виндзор" [Windsor Hotel] (1892) и кинотеатр "Райлендер" [Historic Rylander Theatre] (около 1921)
